Installing Low-flow Urinals to Save Water and Money

If you own or even rent a commercial building in which you have to pay the utility bills, you know how much water can really cost. One of the biggest uses of water in a commercial setting is the toilets and other bathroom fittings. This is especially true if you have a large workforce or even customers who are using the bathrooms on a daily basis. Ask any Markham plumber and they’ll tell you that one of the worst offenders within the bathroom is the urinal.

Normal toilets can only have their flow reduced by so much before they are unable to move solid waste down the drain. Fortunately, urinals do not have this limitation and therefore can be reduced to a bare minimum of water usage. This means that in many cases the Low-flow urinal installed by a professional Markham plumber will only use a pint of water per flush instead of the full gallon used by the average standard flow urinal.

Now, some of you who have done a little research on the topic will be wondering why we wouldn’t recommend a waterless urinal instead. That’s a fair question since we’ve put such an emphasis on the cost of water and how much money you can save by reducing the usage. However, there is a good reason for our choice. Waterless urinals require a significant amount of maintenance including the regular replacement of the cartridges which allow them to function without water. These cartridges are not cheap and will usually more than offset the difference in water savings between that and a low-flow urinal in a fairly short period of time.

Now, this isn’t to say that waterless urinals don’t have a time and place, they certainly do. It’s simply one of those things you’ll need to talk about with a certified Markham plumber to determine the best course of action. Give us a call today, we’d be happy to help you.
